Feature Book: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (If You Give...)
We have been reading If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff this week during school to complement our theme of cookies.  It is a very cute book that follows just what might happen if you gave a mouse a cookie, and it turns out that you would probably end up just where you started!  It is a great book for introducing the concept of cause and effect to little inquiring minds. The words are simple and easy for little ones to remember. The illustrations keep you looking to notice the references to previous pages. It is silly, imaginative, and answers perfectly the question asked in its title. A great book for preschoolers!

Trevor’s review of the book: “Mom, this is my favorite book. I love reading this book.”

Trevor says that he “loves” a lot of things (especially reading!), but he has never deemed a book his favorite before.

I was recommended this book off of a list of 1000 Good Books  over at http://www.classical-homeschooling.org I love the site and the list of books!

Preschool - Week 9

This school year, right after Trevor turned two, we started preschool. I’d love to say that we are faithful in doing it every day, but that’s just not the truth. Honestly we probably do it two or three times a week, but I love that it is slowly getting both of us ready for the pattern of school that will come in the next few years. This year we are taking our inspiration from www.letteroftheweek.com. We have tweaked the way we do things as the weeks go by and added more elements as Trevor has grown. The curriculum is set up in weeks, but realistically it takes us about two weeks to get through it. So here is what we did this week!

Day 1 - Theme: Cookies

Day 2 - Letter: “I”

  •  Color letter “I” coloring page
  • Talk about the sounds the letter “I” makes
  • Talk about words that start with the letter “I”
  • Trace the letter “I” with your finger (we used these Lauri Toys)
  • Practice writing the letter “I”

Day 3 - Number: “9”

  • Count to the number “9”
  • Put nine stickers on the number “9” handout, counting as you put them on
  • Put nine pegs in the pegboard, counting as you go (we use this Lauri Toys pegboard)
  • Work on copying patterns on the pegboard (for beginning math skills)  (more details)

Day 4 - Shape: Circle

Day 5 – Review

  • Do another activity regarding the theme if desired (I didn’t do one this week)
  • Review concepts from this week while putting the pages into the school binder
  • Quickly review past weeks concepts while putting this week’s pages in the binder

Each day after we learn our new concept, we quickly review the past day’s work, read the theme’s story, and possibly sing a song or recite a poem on the theme. In the coming days I will post more details on some of the activities that we do.

Take a Peek Inside our Home

Welcome to my blog.  I have started this to chronicle life in my home.  I invite you to come and take a peek!  My name is Amy and I have been married to my best friend, Tim, for six years.  God has graciously blessed us with two children, and we strive daily to learn better how to train them up in the Lord.  I plan to write about things I'm learning in my home and what I am teaching my children. I hope to inspire you in your home and hopefully learn something from you too!  Stay tuned to find out what we're going to learn next!
