Autumn Wildflowers

This week for our Nature Activity, we went on a walk (well, Trevor rode his bike =) at a local park and looked for autumn wildflowers.   I am not very knowledgeable about plants, so I really didn't know what we would find, but we came back with a nice variety of flowers.

After we collected them all, we sat down at a picnic table and looked at them.  We sorted them by color and noticed that most of them were yellow or orange.  Trevor remembered that these are the warm colors on the color wheel.  We remembered back to where we took our tree blossom walk in the spring, and how those colors were more of the whites and purples and pinks.

We didn't talk about what kinds of flowers these were.  Honestly I don't have a clue what we found, but I get excited when I think of how much we are all going to get to learn together in the coming years.

When we got home we made a wildflower mosaic.  I had cut pieces of magazine paper earlier in the week in the colors we would need, so his job was to dip them in glue and create his work of art!  He did a good job for his first project like this and I learned a good lesson.....cut the pieces BIGGER!  He was completely capable or working with my small pieces, but it took FOREVER.  We worked on it together a little bit, but didn't end up covering the whole paper. Oh well =)  Maybe we will get back to it, or maybe I'll just chalk it up to a lesson learned.

We put blue on the top for the sky, green on the bottom for the grass, and put together petals of oranges and yellows and reds for the wildflowers.  It was really good fine motor skill work.  It also kept him thinking about where to put each color and challenged him to try to match up the points of the petals in the center of each flower (I did the one flower closest to the bottom =)
